Before I begin this column and talk about my hope, I must acknowledge the strong women who have come forward about their experiences with sexual assault at Baylor and at other universities and have persevered even when they might have lost hope. Baylor Line Foundation President Fred R. Norton Jr. ’80, JD ’83, released a statement today in response to a guest column in the Sunday Waco Tribune-Herald by Baylor regent Cary Gray opposing an effort by the Texas Legislature to impose open meetings on Baylor and selected other private universities. There’s an old adage that when you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.  With that in mind, we suggest that someone take the shovel out of Cary Gray’s hands. Mr. …

Baylor announced April 18 that Linda A. Livingstone, the dean at the George Washington University School of Business, would become the university’s 15th president.  Livingstone, who previously served as both a Baylor professor and associate dean of graduate programs at the Hankamer School of Business, will be the first female president in Baylor’s 172-year history and replaces interim President David Garland, who has served in the role since June 1, 2016 and oversaw the early stages of the university’s efforts …

The Baylor Line Foundation invited the three candidates for the open Alumni-Elected Regent position to answer a series of questions about their backgrounds, the role of the Alumni-Elected Regent, and the challenges facing Baylor and what they bring to the table to help address those challenges. The process for the election of three Alumni-Elected Regents was created as part of the settlement of a lawsuit brought by the university against the Baylor Alumni Association. Alumni-Elected Regents serve three-year terms, and …

The Baylor Line Foundation was pleased by the turnout for last night’s Town Hall on Governance Reform.  More than 150 people attended in person and countless others joined us through various online feeds.  We had a lively discussion regarding the various reform options with concerned members of the Baylor family. Obviously, the discussion would have been more productive and thorough had the regents’ views been represented. Five regents chose to accept our invitation and attend in person (Jennifer Elrod, Mark …

The Baylor Line Foundation (BLF) will hold a Town Hall Meeting on Governance Reform on Feb. 15 at the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, despite the Baylor Board of Regents’ decision to formally decline the invitation. The town hall is an effort to end an impasse between the regents and the Bears for Leadership Reform (BLR) over separate proposals that each organization says will expand representation to the Baylor family and provide greater accountability and transparency. The Town Hall will …

Even though her husband, Jim, served as a Baylor Regent for nine years, including one as chairman, Julie Turner ’67, MS ’68, says she never considered the idea of serving in a similar role until she was offered one of the first three Alumni-Elected Regents positions last May. “I had served as chair of the board of Dallas Baptist University, where we accomplished a lot with a good-sized board, but we never encountered the big problems and decisions and the …

The battle over the need to reform the Baylor Board of Regents is fast becoming a ping-pong game.  And some of the players may be bringing larger paddles to the table. The week started with an online invitation from “Bears for Leadership Reform” to an event at the Texas Rangers Museum on Thursday morning. It was followed by some news stories and the creation of a Facebook page that quickly attracted thousands of Likes.  Next came a Wednesday evening announcement …

There was a great deal of chatter over the past few days as the Baylor Family braced for the 60 Minutes Sports program on Tuesday night.  The preparation started late last week with the Wall Street Journal article providing a level of detail that until that point had only been rumored. The Baylor Line Foundation tried to capture the thoughts of many Family members on Monday morning when we issued a statement that questioned the Board of Regents’ decision to …
