“Dave has had a central role in establishing the tradition of sports journalism in Texas, said Tony Pederson ’73, a BLF director, former senior vice president and executive editor of the Houston Chronicle, and current chair of the Journalism department at Southern Methodist University. “As both sports editor of the Waco Tribune-Herald and founder of Texas Football magazine, he has set a remarkable standard for elegant, analytical and fair coverage of sports. He was also a personal mentor to multiple generations of young journalists, and his professional influence extends far beyond Baylor and Texas.”
Campbell started the still-popular Texas Football magazine in 1960. Locally, he served as Tribune-Herald sports editor from 1953-93 before editing the Baylor Bear Insider. In addition, Campbell was one of the prime movers behind the Texas Sports Hall of Fame’s relocation to Waco in 1993.
The scholarship has received several significant gifts and is supported by well-known Texas journalists, such as Pederson, Houston Chronicle sportswriter John McClain ’75, and legendary Baylor journalism professor David McHam ’58.
